Excavation & Site Preparation
Give Your Builder a Better Starting Point
An overgrown lot or sloping property needs work before construction can move forward. Clearing vegetation, removing soil, and shaping the ground turn the planned building area into a site the next crew can work with.
Lucas Excavating provides excavation and site preparation for residential construction, including new housing developments, throughout Sterling Heights and Metro Detroit. The work is planned around what your builder needs ready, not simply what needs digging.

Groundwork That Connects Each Stage of the Build
Site preparation involves several related tasks. Clearing opens the work area, excavation removes or relocates material, and grading shapes the ground for the next phase. Those tasks can be coordinated under one scope or provided as a specific part of your project. That helps define where our work ends and what will be ready for the builder or installing trade.
Site Excavation & Soil Removal
Excavation and removal of soil to prepare the planned construction area. Material can be moved within the lot or hauled away, depending on the site and project needs.
Lot Balancing, Grading & Leveling
Redistribution and shaping of soil to prepare usable ground around the planned home. On sloping lots, balancing connects the building area with the surrounding property.
Land Clearing & Topsoil Removal
Tree and brush removal to open the construction area, with topsoil stripped where required. Clearing provides access to the ground that needs excavation and grading.
Drainage Work & Utility Trenching
Drainage work to address water movement through the site, plus trenches for storm, power, and gas-related project needs. Utility installation remains with the plumber, electrician, or other installing trade.

Coordinate Excavation With the Installing Trade
A builder preparing a lot and an electrician running an underground line need different excavation support. Before work begins, the next trade’s requirements help establish what Lucas needs to dig, move, or grade.
For utility projects, Lucas Excavating handles trench excavation while the plumber, electrician, or other installing trade handles the line. Related clearing, soil removal, and concrete work can be included in the agreed project.

Know What Needs to Move & Where It’s Going
Some lots need soil hauled away. Others need it redistributed to prepare the ground around a planned home. That difference affects the excavation, hauling, and grading included in your estimate.
A firsthand property review helps establish how much ground needs work and whether equipment can reach it. Those details define the job before digging starts, so you know what preparation is included and what the next crew will handle.
